Introduction
Day Skipper Express
Our Day Skipper Express course is made of 2 modules:
- Day Skipper Theory (on-line study)
- The Day Skipper theory (on-line study) should be completed on-line, before arriving at Go-n-Sail where the practical part of the course takes place afloat in Spain and takes 5 days. The theory course takes around 45 hours of study and is suitable for the beginner. This course is delivered using our on-line training partner Navathome.
- Day Skipper practical (afloat)
- The practical part of the course is designed for the people that have some sailing knowledge, i.e. are dinghy sailors or have done the Competent Crew course.
- Time Required
- 45 hours home study prior to practical course
- 1 week (5 days) residential, afloat with Go-n-Sail
Day Skipper Fastrack
Our Day Skipper Fastrack course consists of 3 modules
- Day Skipper Theory (on-line study)
- Competent Crew (Practical)
- Day Skipper practical (Practical).
This course is designed for the novice with no previous sailing experience. We will teach you everything you need to know in order to give you the confidence and experience to hire/charter your own yacht and keep you safe.

- 2 weeks residential, afloat with Go-n-Sail
Course Content
The RYA Day Skipper practical course consists of a single 5 day residential sailing course. You will learn about:
- Preparation for sea and deck work
- Navigation, pilot-age, meteorology
- Rules of the road
- Maintenance and repair work, engines, victualing
- Emergency situations
- Yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail
- Basic pilot-age and passage making, night cruising & watch organisation
- Boat handling

The RYA Day Skipper Express and Fastrack practical courses consists of either 2 or 3 modules

- RYA Day Skipper theory (45 hours online study)

The RYA Day Skipper courses cover the following content:
- Preparation for sea and deck work
- Navigation, pilotage, meteorology
- Rules of the road
- Maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling
- Emergency situations
- Yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail
- Passage making, night cruising
Ability after the course
- You will be able to apply for an ICC which is often required for chartering in the Mediterranean
- You will be sufficiently experienced to charter a boat
Next Steps
After completing the RYA Day Skipper course, you can prepare yourself for the Coastal Skipper course. You will need some practical experience:
- Complete at least 15 days sea time
- Cover at least 300 Nm
- Complete at least 8 Night Hours.
You will also need to complete the Coastal Skipper Theory element and exam. This can be completed online with our partners Navathome, a recognised training centre specialising in online training. Courses are fully comprehensive making sure you are ready for the examination. The course and examination is 100% online.

The RYA Day Skipper Express or Fastrack is the ideal way to get an RYA qualification that will enable you to start a sailing journey that will last a lifetime. Whichever course you choose you will have a “total immersion” experience under watchful and experienced instruction. The courses last for either 5 days or 2 weeks.
Good Skippers are like good managers, they keep their cool when things aren’t going 100% to plan, clear communication and command skills will be required to resolve the situation.
Congratulations – having taken on this challenging role you have added building blocks to your sailing foundations. There are still plenty more blocks to add and this is just the start of your learning curve, but you are well on your way to becoming a competent and respected sailor.
On successful completion of the tidal Day Skipper course, students can apply for an ICC which may be required on Mediterranean sailing holidays and yacht charters.
